The rich tradition and quaint charm of historic Washington, comes alive on Saturday, Dec. 9, when the townspeople celebrate the Christmas holidays by re-enacting colonial traditions throughout the village surveyed by George Washington in 1747.
Visitors can begin the day at the Information Booth on Gay Street, starting at 11 a.m. There, members of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAAC), the nonprofit organization sponsoring the entire day’s activities, will give out information about the day’s events.
Tours of the history and architecture of the town begin at the Information Booth at 1 p.m., and include visits to the town’s churches and Bed and Breakfasts. The tours conclude with a 5 p.m. candlelit tour through the gaily decorated streets. All the while strolling carolers weave through the village.
A new highlight for this year’s event will be a Christmas Cookie Bake and storytelling for children and families at the Middleton Inn, a recently renovated Federal manor house now operating as the newest B & B in Little Washington. Other “firsts” will be Colonial horse-drawn wagon tours of the village, and an opportunity for children to make their own Christmas ornaments at the Middle Street Gallery, where a prominent local artist will assist the children.
For the tenth consecutive year, the Child Care and Learning Center will feature a bazaar of arts and crafts and baked goods, a children’s shopping room and a Santa Claus with phonographs. A raffle benefiting the school will offer a handmade quilt and dinner for, two at the Inn at Little Washington.
Nearby, there will be the children’s Advent Garden at Spring Mountain School. A candle lighting ceremony and musical program with one of the area’s many local talented musitmtfis will delight all children. In addjtfon, there will be a craft and giftrmOcing room for the children, a pie pction and a craft sale featuring the /work of local artisans. Both of these schools’ activities will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
