She was well aware of the distrio t’s Republican leanings from the beginning; former Democratic Del. Jerry Wood said when he dropped oui of the race after six weeks that hd thought it was too Republican fof either him or Mrs. Scheer to win. '*
But she said she was surprised by the “irrational hate vote against Democrats” from far-right Republicans she thinks Del. Katzen was able to exploit.
“I ran a very clean campaign, and tried to target the issues,” she said. “I never made a personal attack. All my attacks were on the issues.”
Mrs. Scheer would not say whether she would run again in two years and try to get her message out to the people.
“1 wouldn’t even want to discuss that,” she said. But she will stay active in Fauquier County politics. {
“I will be here,” she vowed. “! will always be here.”
Del. Katzen, meanwhile, is headed for a Republican caucus in Wintergreen, where strategies will be hashed for advancing the governor’^ agenda through another Democratic legislature.
Many observers predicted that the agenda would stall if Republicans failed to gain control. Democrats havd already begun hailing the returns as 4 repudiation of his plan, and th^ .prospect of partisan gridlock seem? veiy real.
