During the winter months, when the pond on their property freezes over, soccer games are replaced by family ice hockey matches. "We've had so much fun playing ice hockey," Mrs. Hickson said.

Athletic Prowess at Wakefield

On its brochure WCDS promotes itself as a place with "a warm, supportive, family atmosphere.” The Hicksons agree; their family has contributed eight students to the school at one time.

The year Kristin and Bridget enrolled as seventh graders, aftefr the family moved from Front Royal to Marshall, Wakefield School divided in two. WCDS opened in Huntly, and the Wakefield School moved to Marshall. It is now located in The Plains. Although the family lives closer to the school in The Plains, the Hicksons opted to go to the school in Huntly instead.

In 1991, the first year after the split, the Hicksons comprised more than 15 percent of the entire student body — eight out of 50 in kindergarten through 12th grades.
