Jack Kervorkian, the retired pathologist who helped at least 40 people end their lives, continues to fuel the debate around physician assisted suicide. National attention is growing on this controversial issue, with public opinion split on whether or not it should be legal.
However, a recent Gallup Survey revealed that 70 percent of respondents, if terminally ill, would seek one of the fastest growing trends in medicine today — hospice care.
Hospice is not a specific place, but a comprehensive, medically directed program of care which accepts death as a natural part of life, seeking neither to hasten nor prolong the dying process. Last year, over 390,000 peopled turned to hospice. This care usually takes place in the patients' own homes and provides the highest quality of life during the time that remains to them. The hospice
