When I went to thank Chief Burke at his store in Woodville he told me they had just pruchased the new truck for $80,000, on a 90-day note. The cost of maintaining the old 1971-model had reached the point where it no longer made economic sense to postpone the purchase of a new one. One of the best things about this new truck is it has an enclosed cab which carries six men in greater safety, especially in high speed emergency missions. This is critical for our volunteers.
Who are these guys willing to get out of bed in the middle of the night to battle flames without pay? What keeps them motivated? They are real people with jobs and families and problems like everybody else. 1 figure two things make them unique! First, they must like the challenge of battling a terrible emergency. It tests their skills to the utmost. But second, these are men with civic blood in their veins. Service to others and community is the virtue they display daily for all of us to respect, hold up as local heroes and fund.
How to thank them? Dig deep when you get your request for a donation. No complaining, just write the biggest check you can. Your turn to call them may be sooner than you think or fear.
