Mr. Owens had originally opted to have his case heard by a jury, but instead pleaded guilty to the charges. Commonwealth's Attorney Peter Luke said that Mr. Owens had committed the crimes in order to obtain money to buy crack cocaine. His attorney, public defender Laura Cook, asked that the court suspend all of Mr. Owens's sentence and instead send him to drug treatment. Mr. Luke agreed that Mr. Owens needed drug treatment but said he still needed to face punishment for his crimes.
Judge W. Shore Robertson ordered a pre-sentence investigation and asked that Mr. Owens be evaluated by a substance abuse counselor before sentencing, scheduled for March 10.
