VDOT Opposes
'Pave in Place' Plan
In a joint letter to Sen. Charles Waddell (D-Loudoun/Fairfax) and Del. Joe May (R-Loudoun/Clarke), the Virginia Department of Transportation Monday opposed a joint effort by the two to enact legislation allowing for paving of county dirt roads without meeting existing width requirements.
Waddell said the measure was designed "to pave existing dirt roads, with minimal widening so as not to destroy the natural beauty that surrounds them. In our opinion it would preserve mature trees and stone fences and save VDOT a considerable amount of money."
But VDOT commissioner David R. Gehr said in his letter that his department is concerned about safety.
