A New Foundation
The Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation was launched last week.
The organisation hopes to become a means of improving the county's public schools by greatly increasing private support for them. The group hopes its support goes beyond fund raising, to creating conditions that broaden political support for the schools and involve more members of the community in working to improve them.
By agreeing to serve on the Board of Directors of this new organization, your editor has gotten herself involved in a clear conflict of interest when it comes to reporting or editorializing on this new organization. After more than 21 years of attending School Board meetings and sending two children through Rappahannock's school system, she feels she can contribute to such an effort and an obligation to do so.
Therefore, there will be little comment on the foundation in this space in the future. For now, she hopes the community will come together to help this new group become successful.
Senior Nutrition Site
It was disappointing to learn that no effort will be made in the next budget year to expand the senior nutrition program in Rappahannock County to five days a week.
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board, which oversees this program and many others, works with a limited budget. Apparently funds for programs for the aging are particularly tight, and it was pe^-ps too much to expect that Rappahannock’s site would immediately go to five days a week.
However, it is particularly disappointing to realize that Rappahannock's representatives on the board have not been pushing for an expansion of this local service. The county is fortunate to have three fine women representing it on the Community Services Board. However, it appears that rather than representing the county on the board, they are representing the board in the county. ^
In no other jurisdiction is the senior nutrition site only open three days a week. In no other jurisdiction are citizens asked to subsidize the site by providing funds for utilities. This seems to be a clear injustice.
When the Community Services Board gets around to holding a public hearing on its 1999 budget, some time this summer, Rappahannock's senior citizens and their friends need to make sure the board hears of their concerns.
