The Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office has received a grant for $4,600 from the Department of Justice specifically targeted for crime prevention at houses of worship.
The local Sheriffs Office applied for the grant last September in the wake of a rash of vandalism and arson at churches around the country. Eight of the 153 suspicious acts against churches occurred in southern Virginia, said Sheriff Settle.
He mailed a letter regarding the grant to the 38 churches in Rappahannock County last week. One thousand dollars of the grant money is earmarked for safety devices and safety talks at county churches. "The grant will be utilized in providing extra patrol coverage, crime prevention.
