our Commonwealth's senior Senator John Warner. By virtue of being chair of the Senate Rules Committee, Sen. Warner presided over the entire swearing-in ceremony as Chairman of the Congressional Inaugural Committee. He presided with gentle authority and great dignity. Even those of us who had voted against him because of his political beliefs felt that he did Virginia proud in his performance, just as he had done when he presided over the nation's Bicentennial Commission 20 years ago, and when he placed Commonwealth and country before party affiliation in 1994.
I did, however, feel chagrined at the boos and catcalls that I heard following the introduction of Speaker Gingrich, and even that of Mrs. Gingrich. Newt Gingrich was participating in the Inauguration in his official capacity, not his personal one, and the office deserved our respect regardless of the controversy surrounding its current occupant.
