This month dozens of children will participate in the annual Culpeper, Madison, Rappahannock Farm Show. Among these are Cara, Dylan, Nathan, Ashley and Zack Corbin, all of whom entered animals.
Cara, six, is entering an orange and white kitten named “Comet.” She got Comet from a friend of her mothers at a horse show last month.
“We had a fun time together. I taught him things. I taught him how to drink from a bottle and taught him how to go upstairs,” she explained.
Her older brother, Dylan, nine, will be showing two hogs, ‘Elmer Fud and Orlando’ along with a lamb named ‘Fuzzy.’
“I’m really excited. It’s kind of hard. I’ve started getting use to my lamb but my pigs are a little frisky. They bite my shoes!” he exclaimed.
Eleven-year-old Nathan has been showing animals since age nine. This year he is entering two sheep named ‘Bill’ and ‘Ted.’ Right now Nathan says he feels “tense because I wanna win and don’t want to loose.”
Ashley thinks differently though and considers having fun more important than winning. This year, at 13, she intends to show her horse and two market lambs. Last year she entered two animals, one a market hog which won Junior Champion.
The Corbin’s say their mother and older siblings sparked their interested in farm shows. “My mom told me about it and I thought they would be fun,” Ashley explained.
