around the feeder and, on occasion, feed themselves. When the brilliant male arrives they beg as insistently as the grackles. Their food calls are soft and plaintive. The male feeds them, one after the other.
It is somewhat of a miracle that these three have grown from eggdom to this age and escaped squirrels, chipmunks, grackles, Blue Jays, and the agile, tree-climbing black snake. Cats, which I frequently see in the yard, take many newly fledged young birds. Their fine-tuned hearing detects the food calls and leads them to a meal of fledglings.
