An accident on the morning of Aug. 8 on U.S. 211 in Washington, Va. ended in tragedy.
James Jenkins, 18, of Sperryville was traveling eastbound on U.S. 211, near the area of the Rappahannock County Library and west of Route 683, when he struck Lester E. Miller, 53, of Edinburg who was on the left shoulder of the road. The accident occurred about 6:45 a.m.
Mr. Miller was a state inspector for the Virginia Department of TVansportation and a 33 year employee according to David Stanley, assistant resident engineer for the Warrenton office.
He was one of several inspectors overseeing the current paving project on U.S. 211 in Rappahannock County.
“He’s definitely going to be a great loss to our organization,” said Mr. Stanley. “He always put the safety of the traveling public first and always turned out a quality product for VDOT. I never came across anyone who did not think highly of him.”
According to Virginia State Trooper S.M. Knick, Mr. Jenkins had the sun in his eyes, which prevented him from seeing well and he swerved his 1990 Dodge pickup to avoid VDOT workers on the right side of the lane and did not see Mr. Miller on the left.
Mr. Miller was taken immediately to Fauquier Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:23 a.m. He died of multi-system trauma according to the hospital’s public relations department.
Mr. Stanley said Mr. Miller had extensive experience in large overlay projects for VDOT and had worked in Northern Virginia and on Route 66. “Most of the work he did though was in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties,” he said. Mr. Miller lived in Shenandoah County.
