The Rappahannock River is 185 miles in length, 53 miles are above the fall line in Fredericksburg and 132 miles below it, Mr. Wiggins said. There is actually considerably more pollution added to the water above the fall line than below it.
A total of 6,680,000 lbs. of nitrogen and phosphorus enter the water above the fall line and only 4,906,000 lbs. enter the water below it. This calculates out to 3.45 times more total pollutants entering the river each mile above the fall line than below it.
Best management practices can reduce the pollution significantly. Animal waste control (sometimes called a lagoon), agricultural land retirement, vegetative buffers and winter cover crops, respectively, are the most effective means of controlling pollution.
There are stressed areas of the Rappahannock. “One 30acre site produced enough silt into the Rappahan-nock last month to go 10 miles downstream.,” he said.'
