Most of all I remember sitting in a geometry class the spring of my senior year when a car with a local black woman, and some youths who looked like they might be students, drove up. The assumption was that they were inquiring about enrolling the following year. Some members of the class “went ballistic” with racist comments, even someone saying “if we could just get rid of her”, meaning the woman seen as the agitator for integration.
. I might add that we had a substitute teacher that day. Our regular math teacher would never have tolerated such out of order behavior, regardless of her own personal political opinions.
.Me, I sat there and said nothing. Mr. closet liberal, worshiper of the martyred John F. Kennedy, vocal supporter of the JohnsonHumphrey ticket the previous election. I even gave a speech for the Democratic ticket at our school mock election.
Of course, it contained no mention of civil rights, as if that was not an issue in the election. So many people supported Barry Goldwater simply for the reason that he voted against “that Civil Rights Bill.”
