to design a cost-sharing plan. He said he hoped to do a survey of the Rappahannock with a citizens’ group this fall and look at eroding sections of the Rappahannock, find out who owns the land, make contact with them through his program and see if they can use any of the stream bank repair programs.
Stream bank repair involves gently sloping the bank, digging a trench for stones (technically called a rip-rap toe-hold), planting bundles of branches that will sprout (fachines), sticking pieces of alder, sycamore, river birch and beech into the dirt. They will grow quickly and will sprout again if carried downstream in a flood.
An upcoming program by the the Rappahannock River Basin Study Commission will be held Aug. 20 at Walker Grant Middle School in Fredericksburg. Members of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors plan to attend. The public is invited to attend and an open discussion time is planned. For information on the conference call 373-2890.
