Johnson
to appear
before jury
As the result of a probable cause hearing held July 6, the case against accused murderer Joseph Johnson, 41, of Scrabble will be heard by a grand jury in Rappahannock County next week.
Johnson was arrested by Sheriff’s Office personnel at the scene of a shooting last March at Johnson’s residence, just off of U.S. 522 near the Rappahannock-Culpeper Couifty line.
Johnson is charged with homicide and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in the shooting death of Willie Steve Nichols Jr., 28, of Boston. It is alleged that Johnson shot Nichols during a dispute over money.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke presented four witnesses during the probable cause hearing.
Jimmy Wines, an eyewitness to the shooting, provided an account of what happened on the day in question.
Dep. Connie Compton and Maj. Chris Williams of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office gave the court descriptions of what they saw when they arrived at the scene.
Lt. David Solesbee, also of the Sheriff’s Office, described the subsequent investigation, including a search of the crime scene and interviews with the defendant.
Evidence presented by Luke included the gun alleged to have been used in the shooting; the bullet taken from Nichols’ body; a written statement by Johnson; and forensics and autopsy reports conducted on the victim.
Following the hearing, Judge Charles B. Foley determined that there is probable cause for the case to be heard by a grand jury.
Johnson was denied bail. The grand jury is scheduled to hear the evidence when it is called to serve on July 12.
