Gordon Thornhill helps his two sons run a farm at Round Hill. Driving up to the bam, he points out the house where he was born. His daughter now lives there.
Thornhill, a lifelong resident of Rappahannock County, is challenging Bob Anderson for the Stonewall-Hawthome District seat on the county Board of Supervisors. When asked why he was running, Thornhill replied “I feel as though it is time to give some of my experience as a business person and lifelong resident back to the county.”
Thornhill has worked in agriculture all of his life. A graduate of Sperryville High School, he retired in early 1998 from the Rappahannock Farmers Cooperative after 36 years of service, and has been spending much of his free time since then on the farm. Prior to working for the co-op, he worked ten years for a local breeding association.
Thornhill would like to see the county preserve its “agricultural roots.” He would work to preserve current zoning laws as much as possible, to keep Rappahannock from looking like any of the surrounding counties.
In addition, Thornhill would like to see the county become more cost-effective with tax revenues. He noted that taxes have increased over the years due to many factors, including an increase in land values, more services offered by the county and improved schools.
