Intelligence Officer
Roger Beach Pierson, 65, a former intelligence officer with the United States Army, died from complications of anoxic encephalopathy June 10 at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, Calif.
Mr. Pierson traveled extensively in Asia before, during and after his service in the Army. He graduated from the University of Virginia ROTC with a degree in Foreign Affairs and International Economics in 1955. After his commission to the Army he studied Japanese and North Vietnamese at the Army Language School, Monterey, Calif.
He served in Vietnam in the 441st Military Intelligence (MI) detachment with the 5th Special Forces Group during the years 1964-65. In 1966 he worked in the Okinawa civil administration effort with the 441st attached to the 1st Special Forces Group. He returned to Vietnam in October 1966 to command the Technical Intelligence Detachment of the 525th MI Battalion based in Kontum.
