The American Robin is named for the English Robin, a diminutive 5 1/2 inch bird that has a reddish throat and breast. Our robin is much larger, being 8 1/2 inches long. Early settlers, homesick for the birds they knew in English gardens, gave our robin his name for the superficial resemblance of the two species. On first observing the robust and confident American Robin, settlers must have thought it appropriate for a bird of their new home to be so much bigger than the English Robin.
