As the first Europeans here tamed the wilderness, they absorbed some of its wildness and became Americans. This wildness is present in the rollicking, assertive song of the robin. Thoreau, the American philosopher of wildness, perceived this free spirit in the robin when he wrote: “I do detect the aboriginal wildness in his strain, and can imagine him a woodland bird, and that he sang thus where there was no civilized ear to hear him.”
