Approximately 50 Rappahannock middle and high school students are hard at work rehearsing “Heart-Cries of a Captive People,” an ambitious project which will, in the course of a single performance, showcase three different art forms which are sure to captivate audiences this summer:
1) Step: Step is an exciting dance form which originated in ancient African Harvest Festivals and combines the precise movement of military drill and the fluid rhythms of dance.
2) Song: Students will sing African American Spirituals, the music and words of which have captivated and transported listeners for many years.
3) Dramatic Reading: Students will weave a story and tie together the different art forms as they recite with dramatic flare the words taken from historical interviews.
