There are many reasons to be optimistic ; about the future of the Starfish Mentoring i Program. Important progress has been made t since the Charter Class of Adult Volunteers completed the special training course last ! September. A majority of the mentor graduates ; has already been matched with student mentees.
An interesting and enlightening exchange of experiences encountered and lessons learned was shared with fellow mentors and Starfish advisers during a social tea at" Lois Manookian’s home on June 11. What made this meeting most meaningful, however, was the ! presence of several high school students who will be seniors this fall. Among them was the only high school student who trained with the charter class of mentors in September, Meaghan Fairbrother.
The Starfish training must have made a positive impression and Meaghafi took on the mission as her own. Now, there is a team of 13 seniors who have volunteered to be mentors to an equal number of new eighth graders making their transition into high school next school year.
To celebrate this completion of their training the new Starfish mentors were invited to a picnic at the Rappahannock Park in June, where they met, shared lunch and began a
