During the icy winter of 1994, we lived in a log cabin near Rectortown. In July, four young bluebirds had fledged from a nest box within a few yards of the front porch. At the end of one very cold January day — the temperature was in single digits — I watched from the porch as eight bluebirds lined up on the fence and silently followed each other into that box.
Their combined warmth would see them through the night when temperatures dropped to near zero.
