One of the unique joys of the Bleu Rock has always been to be able to enjoy a glass or bottle of wine, while enjoying the view over the very vines from which it came. That won’t be changing, but Mr. Carlip is deeply involved in working to improve the vineyards: “We have a crew coming in the next couple of weeks to do our first cutting and we are going to take some extra care on some of the vines. It has really been left on its own. Our Seyvals (a white grape varietal) have been throwing too much grape, which is killing the vine. We have great production out of it, but we want to make it good pro- ! { duction for the health of the Vineyard, changing the methods of production... balance production with the vitality of the vines and maybe introduce I a new variety, I’m thinking of the Norton.
We are not sure, we have to first work with the <1 varieties we have, we may have some space to add another vine... a lot of vines have problems in Virginia because they are not originally from Virginia, where the Norton Variety is. It’s a direc- • tion, it may have some turns, but its a direction.”
Mr. Carlip has some agricultural background behind his interest. Previously, he worked with American Home Foods, managing the division that makes the Polaner products (Polaner Allfruit, etc.) and in that capacity he worked closely with grape, raspberry and blackberry farms all over North and South America.
.With this beautiful weather we have been having lately, it is a perfect time to go dine on the Bleu Rock patio and see what they have been up to. Perhaps come out on Saint Patrick’s Day to open the Pub?
