Treat yourself to a lyrical interlude before March is out: visit Susan Fleischmann’s Middle Street Gallery exhibition, “The Path Retraced”, 15 canvas and paper oil paintings. Several more of her works are in the members’ display room behind the front gallery and should be seen too.
The pictures are simply framed or have no frames, strong enough works not to call for embellishing surroundings.
A number of the paintings are primarily abstract, but Fleischmann’s relationships with nature tempt her to reference human beings, flora, buildings and heavenly manifestations.
Picture # 9, “ A Country Life” is divided into a light and a dark side. A tree and a nude figure on the left, against a light background, are contrasted with a dark half where a comet like flourish passes above two touching ovoid forms. These forms appear in two other pictures and seem to allude in the artist’s mind to the moon.
