Set in contemporary Taipei, a widowed Master Chef with three beautiful daughters comes to terms with the “empty nest syndrome.” Every week he subjects the children to the “Sunday dinner torture event”, where he prepares countless elaborate dishes.
The cooking scenes, both at home and later, in a huge commercial restaurant kitchen, are superb. Seeing the use of bamboo steamers, plus amazing skills with a cleaver, is enough to make any “foodie” swoon. Making a lunch pail for a little school girl he prepares duck with wild greens, carp with garlic sauce, spare ribs, veggies and dumplings. (He later marries this schoolgirl’s mother in a surprise turn of events at the end of the film.)
One by one the daughters marry and leave, and everyone turns out happy!
