One feature of some of Fleischmann’s work that I noticed is the invention of a sort of calligraphy. In one painting, I can imagine reading a text; in another, the “writing” is like Japanese calligraphy; a third picture recalls Arabic Kufic script. Perhaps the artist wants us to think about a relationship between the abstract communications of writing and painting.
I did not find all the pictures equally inspiring. In a few, the brush work, compositions, and color combinations did not convey to me what Ms. Fleischmann must have had in mind, but since one’s reaction to works of art is conditioned by what one brings to them, what one knows already, there will be many different responses to this painter’s work. Serenity suffuses the exhibition, and I felt delight in how Susan Fleischmann’s art suggests natural forms that evoke a world of sensations and dreams.
