Pi Day is celebrated in the third month, March, on the 14th day, and at 1:59 PM, or 3.14159. This year; as in the past, Rappahannock County celebrated Pi Day quietly. Sure, there were exchanges of High Pi signs instead of High Fives, with three fingers up and the little finger bent over to represent .14159. And many pizza pies were munched into at exactly 1:59 p.m.
But for the most part residents went about their business with no outward sign of knowing about or caring about Pi Day. Maybe a few had slight smiles on their faces. That’s the Rappahannock way. Rappahannock people are a subtle people.
But there is turmoil this year in Pi circles. On the Internet there is a web site claiming that Pi itself is a hoax. Known as “The Brotherhood,” the keepers of the web site seem to be disgruntled mathematicians who say that Pi is 3.0. Nothing more, nothing less: just 3.0. They say that for thousands of year people have been misled into thinking Pi is an irrational number, when all along it has been just like any other number. Like 2. Like 8.
This is a bombshell. It is almost as serious as the revolt of the monks in the Middle Ages when they became fed up with writing Pi out with Roman Numerals. III. I IV I V IX and so on for a few hundred decimal places was becoming unbearable. In protest, they threw their Bic pens on the' Scriptorium floor and began to utter oaths. A decision was quickly made to shift to regular numbers. Another decision was also made: replace the monks with computers. You don’t see many monks around nowadays.
But what of this new upheaval? The argument boils down to an ideal world
