to a guest speaker this week. Mr. Jim Gannon, owner of the O 1 d Sperryville Bookshop and history buff, shared his Civil War expertise with the group as a prelude to their upcoming reading of the Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane.
• Twenty four Wakefield Country Day School students, along with several parents and teachers, returned recently from a four day visit to the province of Quebec, Canada.
Arranged by French teacher, Diane Wood, the trip offered a combination of winter sports, history geography and French. After landing at Dorval airport in Montreal, the group traveled by bus to Domaine de la Truite, where they had an adventurous day of dog sledding and snowshoeing.
The next day featured a morning ski lesson at Stoneham and afternoon skiing under clear Canadian skies. At the Village Des Sports, in Valcartier, the group slid down snowy slopes on large inner tubes and whirled in the thrilling “Tomade”, a circular inflated raft.
In Quebec City, the students watched a three dimensional historical movie, toured the ancient walled city and the imposing Chateau Frontenac, overlooking the icy St. Lawrence River.
The last evening was spent enjoying traditional Quebecois foods, learning about the process of making maple syrup, singing and dancing at the beautiful cedar Cabane a Pierre, in Beauce. It was a trip that will not soon be forgotten.
