On Saturday, April 15 the 22 annual Fodderstack 10-K Race will be run from Flint Hill to Washington.

While there are any number of participants who legitimately compete for the $300 cash prize offered to the runner who bests the course record of 31:26 for men or 36:46 for women, the emphasis is on having a good time.

The first, second and third place trophies crafted by local artisan Meryl Strange for males and females in each of 11 categories also acts as something of an incentive, and perhaps the Eva Smith Memorial trophies to the first finishing Rappahannock County resident (male and female) also adds some fleetness of foot. We figure if we parse the categories fine enough, we’ll be able to put all of Meryl’s children through college on the trophy billings.

In addition to the mug/trophies, tee shirts and the cheers of the multitudes, for the first time we are offering drawings for gifts donated by local businesses.

Middleton Inn is offering overnight accommodations, the Flint Hill Public House is offering dinner for two and Rae’s Place is offering lunch for two among many others.

The race runs from the Flint Hill Packing Shed down Route 522 to a right turn onto Fodderstack Road (look for the State Trooper; don’t run into him or his car, he is unlikely to think this as disarmingly cute as you do). Continue winding down the Fodderstack Road where some helpful local resij dents will keep you from wani dering off the course, hint: if I the only other runners you see are four legged, have ear tags 1 and four stomachs, you’re off ! course. [ At several points, girl i scouts will be passing out ' water, and the rescue squad will be perched on Lee’s Hill for the faint of heart, short of breath and imminent of col! lapse. Don’t worry, you’ll be on the home stretch then, and its (almost) all downhill from there. Deputy Ray Jackson will turn you left in Washington, and you’ll go right to the courthouse on Gay Street and a big finish where the teeming millions of specta
