In an Aug. 9 press release the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS) reported that Heidi and Lindsay Eastham's Rucker Farm had voluntarily recalled "all of its goat cheese sold on or after July 13, 2000, which includes soft and hard varieties, because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes."
The press release quotes Rucker Farm management as having stated, "Because of the potential of foodborne illness, all customers who have purchased any goat cheese from Rucker Farm on or after July 13, 2000 should not eat it and should return it to Rucker Farm for a full refund."
The press release does not speak to the procedural oddities that apparently characterized DACS’s handling of the case, of the tests that a private, certified laboratory performed on similar samples and received a negative indication for the presence of the same pathogen, nor did it mention that subsequent testing of Rucker Farms' products
