If you think you have to wait until fall to enjoy the crisp and crunchy, succulent and sweet taste of just picked Virginia apples, think again. The harvest of fresh, flavorful Virginia apples gets underway even before you store the suntan lotion and beach towels for the season.
Paula Red apples, with their unique sweet-tart flavor, launched the apple harvest in late July. Then in early August come Virginia Ginger Gold apples, noted for their outstanding taste and crisp white flesh. Popular Galas are up next, debuting in midAugust. Easy to spot with their distinctive red/orange color and yellow stripes, Virginia Gala apples are crunch, juicy and full of flavor.
And that is just the beginning. The harvest of Virginia apples continues through late October, and includes favorites such as Red and Golden Delicious, Staymans and Fujis. And this year, predictions call for a very handsome and flavorful Virginia apple crop. Thanks to adequate rain and moderate temperatures. Virginia apple growers anticipate good quality and size, and an excellent 2000 apple crop overall.
