peaceful and quaint Italians city. Urbino has protective walls that reach up at least a hundred feet and cobblestone streets that wind up and down throughout the city. Looking down at the city from a nearby peak revealed terra cotta roofs and a skyline that climbed up and down. It was a fantastic site.
After five days of relaxation we decided to see the gem of Italy, Rome. Evidence quickly emerged that we were entering Rome; it wasn't the building or the architecture but the traffic. Any story that you have heard about driving in Rome is probably true. They have modern day traffic on first century roads. This made our decision to walk once we got into the city that much easier.
It would have been impossible to see all of Rome in the short time that we had allotted. It would have be impossible to see it all in a month. Rome was not built in a day and there is no way to see it in one either! There were so many museums and cathedrals and ruins we had a hard time picking which to see. First we found ourselves engulfed within the halls of the Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel. The art and artifacts within that place are astounding and irreplaceable.
Next was the coliseum. The coliseum itself is elliptical not round, like many people think. It has a labyrinth of walls were wild animals used to roam before being shoved into the center stage. The walls just rose up around us and it is spectacular that such a structure could be built without the help of modern technology. It is a funny thing that even stars gravitate towards the pull of Rome; after entering and ogling of the sheer size of the place we heard a very familiar voice. We saw another fellow tourist, Nicholas Cage. To say the least, it was very surprising. After taking a picture or two we left this monstrous structure.
Rome is something that will not likely be forgotten in my mind. It has so much to offer and to see. It was the beginning of so many things and so much was done there. It is something that people spend a lifetime on just learning its history. Needless to say we did not have that much time.
