Bluebirds and purple martins are what were once called "dooryard birds,” birds that live in close proximity to man and evoke both affection and a compulsion to protect.
Because we see these birds daily, we know more about them and experience anger when predators strike. A recent telephone call and a Sunday visit to our stall at the Farmers' Market in the Archwood Green Barns at The Plains presented me with an unexpected slant on predation.
The telephone call was from Marilyn Cooley, a name that may be familiar to many readers, for she is the owner of the quiet, thoughtful and authoritative voice that I hear most mornings on National Public Radio as I drive around Rappahannock County.
