God's activity in what he has created. Like any ' other human activity, art is not an absolute end in itself, but is directed to and ennobled by man destination: heaven.
In the celebration of holy Mass, the Church participates in a foretaste of the heavenly liturgy. Sacred images in our churches and homes are intended to awaken and nourish our faith in the mystery of Christ. The honor rendered to an image passes to its prototype. Like a beloved photograph of one’s mother, whoever venerates an image venerates the person portrayed in it.
The Church insists that honor paid to sacred images is a respectful veneration, not the adoration due to God alone.
Religious worship is not directed to images in themselves, considered as mere things, but under their distinctive aspect as images leading us on to God incarnate. Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier.
