She also serves as Director of International Operation for Operation Sail, Inc., the non-profit organization created by President Kennedy in 1961 to foster good will among nations through the spectacular gathering of tall ships. Among other duties, Ms. Viator supervised the tall ship event in New York harbor on July 4th to celebrate the millennium. Combined with an international naval review, it was the largest gathering of vessels in peacetime history.

“Alma has more energy than a power plant,” says her husband, Ben Jones. He met Viator when he was serving as a Georgia Congressman in 1989. “It was like putting a match to dynamite,” he says now. They married in 1992.
