not have these. A five gallon bucket of hulled, dried walnuts will crack out between three and four pounds of kernels. The more experience you have, the quicker the task.
The walnut hulls were used for staining baskets and clothing in earlier days. So be prepared to have stained hands when you are hulling. A small amount of bleach will help to take the stain away.
We also wore jewelry made from the walnuts. The nuts were sliced and carved into a basket or pin. This was in the 40’ and 50’s. Mr. Aubrey Keyser’s father-in-law, Mr. Slaughter carved peach seeds as well into baskets and monkeys. Some of us are very lucky to have some of these.
Black Walnut Pie
Combine one fourth cup sugar, one tablespoon of flour, pinch of salt and three beaten eggs. Add one fourth cup water and one cup dark molasses and blend well. Add three fourth cups of chopped walnut kernels to two tablespoon melted butter. Mix the two mixtures together and put into an unbaked pie shell. Bake ten minutes at 425 degrees then reduce heat to 350 degrees for about 35 minutes.
