______ produce good walnuts every other year. Others never produce good walnuts at all depending on the soil, where the walnut tree is located. How can you tell a good producing walnut tree? Watch the squirrels. You and the squirrels will be in competition to find the good walnuts.

Before you have the kernels, you first have to pick the green walnuts up. Then you have to remove the green hulls. The walnuts then have to be dried which takes several weeks. If they get too dry you cannot get nice pieces, so they need to be a little damp.

To crack the walnuts, I like to use a hammer and a block of wood. You put the blossom end up. Take the hammer and give it a hard whack! There are some special devices made for cracking walnuts, but we did
