Girls' Basketball
It was a one game week for girls' basketball, but it was a big game. On Thursday, Oct. 26 the Lady Cougars from Manassas Park came to the RCHS gym. The last time the two teams met it was at Manassas Park and both teams were winless.
The Rappahannock girls won that first contest on Oct. 3 by a score of 35-30. Since then the Lady Panthers had lost five in a row and entered into Thursday night s game with a 1-8 record. The girls from Manassas Park had won twice since their loss against the RCHS squad and entered the contest with a 2-7 record placing them sixth in the Bull Run District.
On Thursday night, the Lady Panthers came to play. Gwen Johnson had a breakaway lay up on a steal to start the game, then sank a three pointer and led the squad to a 12-2 first quarter lead. The Lady Cougars never got back in the game. It was pretty much all Rapp as Amanda Weakley had 14 of her team leading 17 points in the second half and led all Rappahannock scorers. Gwen Johnson had seven points and Amy Clinedinst added six.
Both teams now share 2-8 records, but the Lady Panthers are in sixth place because of their two victories over the Cougars.
The Junior Varsity Panthers were not quite as lucky in their contest with the Manassas Park J.V. team. It was a close game from start to finish, but the Lady Panthers could never seem to catch the Cougars always trailing by a couple of baskets. When the final horn sounded, the JV team from Manassas Park had won 23-17. Ryisha Cook had a season high ten points to pace the Rappahannock scorers.
Another highlight ■ of the night was the recognition of the players' parents. The girls' basketball Varsity and Junior Varsity players as well as the runners from the Cross Country team accompanied their parents onto the court at half time for a brief but nice tribute to all the moms and dads.
Cross Country
With the season over, all that remained for the Panther Cross Country team was the District tournament. The tournament was held at Madison County High School on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Over 60 runners from each of the District's seven schools were entered in the boys' competir
