making money at it, I was really hooked,” he says. “It beat pulling tobacco or picking cotton or any number of other jobs I had done.”
Working his way through college, Jones had other odd jobs, driving a truck, taking the census, making Halloween masks, working on the railroad, and sticking sticks in popsicles.
“I really threw myself into acting,” he says now. “I paid my dues and learned the craft.” He performed in over ninety productions, in summer stock, repertory theatres, outdoor dramas, dinner theatres, children’s theatre, and national tours. His favorite stage roles include the Gravedigger in “Hamlet,” Long John Silver in “Treasure Island,” and the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in Sidney Michael’s “Dylan”.
In the 1970’s, Jones was based in Atlanta doing film and television work when, as he puts it, “I was in the right place at the right time.” He auditioned for a role on a new television show, “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
“That show changed my life. After 15 years of acting, I was an overnight success.”
