Thanksgiving is fast approaching and it is one of my favorite holidays of the year, when we all gather with family and friends to give thanks for all that we have as Americans. We all have a great deal to be thankful for.
Untold numbers of people have died and continue to lose their lives in attempting to come to our country. Their desire is to build a new life as an American citizen.
I can remember going to a one-room school with my sisters and brother in what is now the Shenandoah National Park. There were many such schools at that time and Hull School was owned by the county- tyIt
was located on Route 612 which is now Hull School Road. It was about six miles west of US 211 and Route 612 continued into Page County which was a country road at that time.
The school was" used for many purposes, but this was a special Thanksgiving program which included as many students as possible. Then they all joined in the singing.
They had grades one through seven and the higher grades were sent to Sperryville School, which is now Faith Mountain. There was no transportation for anyone at that time. All the children walked to school together, as they passed each home, those children would join in. Not only did they enjoy the walk but they talked all the way and learned how to get along with one another.
The facilities of the school included two outside toilets, one for the girls and one for the boys. The water was carried in a pail from a nearby spring, and each child would have a glass with their name on it. A wood stove kept the school warm in the winter.
