If there's an athlete on your gift list this holiday season, there's no need to get overly exercised.
Every athlete can use more shoes and socks, and a gift certificate to a favorite sporting good store is always a great stocking-stuffer.
But if you're looking for gifts beyond the old tried-and-true, here are some ideas to help you make their holiday a happy one:
• School colors: You can't go wrong with T-shirts, ball caps, sweatshirts or similar garb with school names and colors. Choose your athlete's current school, or the college or professional team he or she likes to cheer for. It's easy to find something for under $10, but you can certainly spend more if you want. Many sporting goods stores, catalogs and Web sites offer variations on this theme such as school blankets and wastepaper cans.
• Reading matter: Whatever the sport, there's at least one good magazine the athlete on your gift list would love to receive.
If it's an Olympic sport such as swimming or wrestling, you can quickly link up to that sport's Web site by visiting the U.S. Olympic Committee’s site at www.olympic-usa.org. From there, most of the national governing bodies' sites have magazine subscription information.
