the right note
Harris compared the art of making a scent to music. A customer interested in having a scent created comes to the shop and puts a small dipstick into an oil, to see what works for her. Sometimes it's necessary to put two or three scents together, but Harris rarely wants to use more than that — the scent can become a little muddied.
"There is no language for the sense of smell,” she said, "but it's a lot like music. You need a base note and a treble influence."
It clearly is a kick for her to work with the oils. It evokes an earlier period for her, and she thinks others will agree.
