"Well, it's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas/All around the town."

That holiday lyric was tinkling around in my head even as I raked up the last of the fall leaves. The season seems to start earlier each year ... the decorations, catalogs with holly sprigs on the front cover, pre-sales of candy canes, chocolate oranges and Reese's peanut butter Christmas trees and extension cords.

Hallmark is one of the first companies to get a jump on Christmas, j'm not talking about their cards and gift wrap. I'm talking about the July preview of the season's new Hallmark ornaments. For avid collectors this is the time to catch the fourth in a series of rocking horses, or the last in a series of the Santa and Mrs. Claus collection.

One of the first purchases I make each year is a Hallmark ornament from Ribbons in Warrenton for each of the children. I'll wrap each one and put it by the appropriate place at dinner, usually on the day we decorate the tree. It's a little gift that they've come to look forward to. Each year as the box of ornaments comes out, the children will delight in rediscovering one of those treasured ornaments.
