. With tryouts completed and teams selected, all winter sports programs were in high gear as coaches prepared new squads for initial scrimmages or first games.

Head Coach, Mike Dayton and his Assistant Coach Ricky Shaw and JV Coach, Mike Atkins, have been working their teams every night at the gym from 7 to 9 p.m. The Varsity team has scrimmaged an Alumni team on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2 p.m. the last two weeks. According to Coach Dayton, "We've got a long way to go to become a cohesive team on the court. The guys are working hard and I'm hopeful we have a hard-nosed hustling type of game. We've seen some positives, but right now its all about working hard to get ready."
The JV squad has some talent, but with a completely new coaching staff, lots of work is required to implement a new system of plays, defensive schemes, and offensive sets. In addition to practicing, the JV squad has been scrimmaging the Varsity and the Junior Panthers.
Coaches Mike Leake and Gary Settle took the new (it's been four years since we had an eighth grade team) Junior Panthers on the road for some scrimmage action at Johnson Williams Middle School (JMWS) in Clarke County. After three days of some pretty up beat, high tempo practices under the coaching staff, the boys had a chance to see and feel game conditions.
They played 6 six-minute quarters at JWMS Thursday, Nov. 16. Afterwards, Coach Leake said, "We re pretty raw and inexperienced. Coach Settle and I saw some positives during the scrimmage, but we've got a lot of work to do to become a competitive, winning squad. But, that's the direction we're aiming for."
