an amendment, which would make the bill subject to state and local law, something Republicans would usually unalterably demand. It seems the Democrats wanted nondiscriminatory hiring laws to apply, which caused one “Christian” lobbying organization to complain that the bill was “in danger of being hijacked by homosexual groups.” Do What!?
Perhaps at this point, clearer heads may already be seeing the potential problems inherent in mixing the bureaucracy of government with the spiritual eccentricities of various religions. People who call themselves “conservatives” are pushing this new policy, although traditionally conservatives have argued for less government in our lives. The “Christian Right” has in fact often argued that federal social programs have been the enemy of morality and the cause of the very ills they wish now to fix by funneling federal bucks through the pulpits.
Which pulpits? Who qualifies? Who doesn’t? Why not? Can you and I start a church, run a social program, fill out some federal forms, jump through some bureaucratic hoops, and get us a nice government grant to do good?
