Before consolidation there were many smaller schools, and often they would have extra runs to make to deliver the students to a particular school.
Mutt served many years as Supervisor of Transportation for Rappahannock County Schools. At this time the office was in Front Royal since Warren County and Rappahannock shared a school system together.
Mutt, hired the drivers, including my husband. He made the decision if buses would run in Rappahannock on bad winter days. He would set his clock for five a.m. and check the temperature and weather with the Superintendent in Front Royal and they would make a final decision.
Archie Dodson’s Garage in Sperryville, which is next to Hill Atkins Fruit Market was where the school buses were maintained. This was in the 40’s and early 50’s. The property was then purchased where the present garage is located.
Allie Huff was a bus driver and the first mechanic hired in 1952. When Mutt retired, Allie became Supervisor of Transportation for 17 years, retiring in 1991.
James, brother of Mutt, operated the “Atkins Store” in Sperryville and Mutt worked part-time until James’ death. He then operated the store for many years, which is “Appetite Repair” now.
