A friend of mine said she learned a great lesson the other day. She told this one on herself. Running ten minutes late for an important meeting, she grabbed a cab at morning rush hour in D.C. way out on Massachusetts Ave. and told the cabbie to head down Mass. Ave. to the Rock Creek Parkway and on to Capitol Hill. The cabbie took off in another direction.

While my friend fussed and fumed and pouted, the old driver, as relaxed as if he were in a hammock at the beach, slid through side streets, parking lots, and back alleys and got her to her destination eight minutes faster than she had ever made it before.

As her emotions changed from rage to relief, she tipped the driver with uncommon generosity. The old fellow, who had said nothing during her tirade, smiled benevolently.

“You know,” he said, “the most important lessons we learn in life are the ones we learn after we know it all.”
