Mutt went to Oxford, N.C. to pick it up. When he returned to Sperryville, everyone was staring and excited about seeing the different looking bus.
It was a square shaped school bus with two big square windows on each side, and not nearly as tall as they make them now.
It did not have a heater and only carried about 32 pupils. Many changes in body style and size have taken place over the years. Most of the buses today seat 64 passengers, but some of the coach type will seat even more.
I can remember the deep steps to get on the school bus when I started school. I was so little, my older sister had to help me up the step.
The roads were very different when Mutt started driving. Chains had to be put on by hand to get through the snow and mud in the winter time, and were kept on much of the winter. This never stopped Mutt from making his route.
